Udaipur is also known as the "City of Lakes," the "Venice of the East," or the "Kashmir of Rajasthan," is a major city, municipal corporation and the administrative headquarters of the Udaipur district in the Indian state of Rajasthan.It is the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar in the former Rajputana Agency. It was founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia clan of Rajput, when he shifted his capital from the city of Chittorgarh to Udaipur. It remained as the capital city till 1818 when it became a British princely state, and thereafter the Mewar province became a part of Rajasthan when India gained independence in 1947. Udaipur is located in the southern part of Rajasthan state, just near to the Gujrat border. It is surrounded by Aravali Range, which separates it from Thar Desert. It is around 660 km from Delhi and appox 800 km from Mumbai, placed almost in the middle of two major Indian metro cities. Besides, connectivity with Gujrat ports provide Udaipur a strategic geographical advantage.Besides, Udaipur is well connected with nearby cities and states by means of road, rail and air transportation facilities, including Maharana Pratap Airport. Udaipur is spread across an area of 37 km, and stands as sixth largest city in Rajasthan by population, Popular languages spoken include Hindi, English and Rajasthani (Mewari). Udaipur is a very popular tourist destination, and known for its history, culture, scenic locations and the Rajput-era palaces. It is popularly knows as City of Lakes because of its sophisticated lake system. Five of the major lakes, namely Fateh Sagar Lake, Pichola Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake, Goverdhan Sagar and Doodh Talai Lake. Besides lakes, Udaipur is also popular for its massive historic forts and palaces, museums, galleries, natural locations and gardens, architectural temples, as well as traditional fairs, festivals and structures.
City Palace:- The beautiful and majestic City Palace towers over the Pichola Lake. This huge structure wasn't built by one, but many rulers. The fort is a mix of a rich blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, Medieval, European and Chinese Architecture each blending beautifully with the other.
Doodh Talai:- This is a rock and fountain garden which is a great place to enjoy the sunset and one can see the wide expanse of the city. Also, there is an Areal tramway (cable car) connecting a garden of Doodh Talai and the Karni maata Temple.
Fateh Sagar Lake:- It is an artificial lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar.
Moti Magri :- The memorial is located on a hill near Fateh Sagar Lake where an enthusiastic guide narrates stories related to maharana pratap and mewar with enthusiasm. In the evening at 7:30 begins the sound and light show.
Saheliyon ki Bari:- Saheliyon-ki-Bari is a major garden and a popular tourist space in Udaipur. It has fountains and kiosks, a lotus pool and marble elephants. It was built by Rana sangram Singh.
Lokkala Mandal:- Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal is a cultural institution based in Udaipur engaged in studying folk art, culture, songs and festivals of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh and to popularise and propagate folk arts, folk dances and folk literature.
